So sorry to hear this morning of Eric's passing. We worked together when meetings were called in Toronto. We also walked and talked from the hotel to the meetings. He was a gentleman of great knowledge of the railway and life. I have thought of him often throughout the years since his retirement. My condolences to his family.

Although we were unable to visit the funeral home, we were saddened by recent the passing of Eric. We had many fun times with the Sahlis back in the heyday of the Windsor Transportation community. Warm memories of CN functions, Windsor Transportation Club nights and especially Windsor Raceway with Eric, Gerry and our mutual friends Max & Liz Perritt. Our condolences and prayers on behalf of the family. Eric was the consummate professional and a wonderful human being. Godspeed Eric. love, Harry & Moe Annan.

Dearest Pam and family. So very sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. He was a generous, kind and funny man and I will always remember the laughs we had on many occasions with your Mum and Dad who introduced me to competitive Trivial Pursuit...no really competitive! Losing parents, even when they have had a wonderful life is never easy and my thoughts are with you at this very sad time. May the memories of both of your parents bring you comfort and the love of the family they so loved hold you close. Denny

Dear Sandy and Family, My condolences on the passing of your father. I remember when we worked together Sandy, all those years ago, how fondly you spoke of your family and your father in particular. The obituary in the paper was a beautiful tribute to him. I know you will treasure memories of him for the rest of your life. Take good care, Elaine Astles

One of the remarkable things about my Uncle Eric was his combination of hard and softness. No doubt the hardness was born of an extremely tough Depression-era childhood. Barely out of boyhood, Eric was left to sink or swim, and in very rough waters. But unlike many of his peers, Eric swam. He came through those hard early years absolutely determined to make good for himself and his family. He used what he had learned --perseverance, honour, responsibility-- to make life better for others. The Depression-era boy became an unusually kind and generous man, quietly offering a life lesson in commitment and self-sacrifice. I will remember all of this, but also “Uncle E’s” sense of mischief, for the trademark squinty-eyed look he would give (only those he loved) just before he “put the needle in,” his reminder to stay real.

Uncle Eric was my favorite uncle he and I shared much in common. Our love for golf, baseball, hockey and our faith in Christ. He always had time for people and showed his love and generosity by giving his time, which is the greatest gift you can give. Now you have reached your forever home with Jesus with aunt Gerry and all your family who preceded you waiting for you. Enjoy, God bless!! I love you! Bill and Gayle

I cherish the memories of the many hours spent, especially during my first years in Windsor, with friend Pam and the rest of her wonderful siblings and in-laws during many gatherings in Forest Glade. There was much chatting and laughing about old stories, playing Trivial Pursuit and cards or enjoying a meal together. Whether a guest was 10 or 30 or 60, you could always count on Eric’s big, warm smile to beam your way. But you had better be on your toes, because his quick wit would challenge you at any moment! I also remember that it was Eric, during those long ago family outings to Windsor Raceway, who was only too happy to teach me how to read the stats, so my race picks were not solely based on how quirky a name each horse had! In later years, Eric’s smile and sense of humour were something he never lost. Not lost either were his gentlemanly ways (still opening doors for the ladies at 92!) and his knack for making newcomers to his home (he welcomed my husband Gary with enthusiasm) feel right at home, making sure you had a glass of wine or cup of tea in your hand before asking, “what’s new with you?” I will miss that.
